SPRING 2024
Beric Henderson
I have spent the last few years creating artworks that focus on the ocean, viewing it as a living entity in danger from environmental abuse and climate change.
I now live in a coastal town and observe the ocean every day. Our oceans are changing.
They are becoming contaminated with microplastics and affected by natural disaster fallout such as the Fukushima nuclear reactor catastrophe; sea level is rising and ocean currents are speeding up due to global warming.
In this current project I have created a series of detailed ink drawings and paintings that help us to visually explore and appreciate oceanic wave patterns and rhythms, and the impacts of global warming on the Antarctic ice cap.
The artworks are intended to promote reflection on the power, importance, and beauty of the earth’s oceans and the critical role ongoing research will play in understanding and maintaining it.
“Counterpoint” (2020) was shortlisted for the 2021 Adelaide Perry Drawing Prize (Sydney). “Tsunami” (2019) was shortlisted for the 2020 Adelaide Perry Drawing Prize (Sydney) and the Jacaranda Drawing Prize (Grafton Regional Gallery) and touring exhibition.
