SPRING 2024

Johanna Finnegan-Topitzer

Cormorants

From traveling to unique landscapes to walks around my backyard, I am constantly inspired by the life around me. My work focuses on the biodiversity of wildlife and plants on this planet.

Slow it Down

Luna Moon

Evening Flight

Many of the subjects I choose to represent come from the woods, mountains, and seaside of the northeastern United States, as this is my home.

Plover with 3 Chicks

My creative process involves exploring in nature and taking reference photos. I then come back to my studio and start with simple sketches. I paint my animals with gouache which allows me to get subtle details. I use cut colored paper to create plants and landscape elements and define their details with pen. All these components are made separately and then adhered to a solid color background.

Snowy Owl

Last Song of the Salt Marsh Sparrow

It is my hope that my artwork invokes a sense of wonder and appreciation for the wild things with which we share the planet. If humans learn about and value all life, understanding the connections between all living things, they will more likely want to protect it.
