Visual
SPRING 2024
Mia Risberg
These works are part of an ongoing series of drawings that I began making in 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, at a time when it felt more difficult, for me, to isolate in the studio.
I was attracted by the simplicity of the material: colored pencils and paper. Their ease and portability appealed to me and allowed me to work anywhere in my house, even while being surrounded by my family.
These small drawings capture what I perceive as moments of stillness in my life.
Some drawings are sparsely populated. Others hint at a human presence through the depiction of a person’s shadow. Others yet are devoid of figures completely and depict solitary settings or landscapes.
The simplification of forms and colors I employ when making these allows me to distill what I see into something that is not only new, but also calmer and more orderly than our chaotic external world.
Nature appears as a place of solace and comfort. Regardless of where I am in the world, or what state of mind I am in, nature is familiar to me.
